the torch

The highlight of our Summer Olympic  for me was the Opening Ceremony. All the kids lined up in their countries, national athems from our 5 chosen countries (Switzerland, Great Britain, Russia, France and Japan) were played, and then all of the kids sang "We Are the World, We Are the Children". It really brought tears to my ears - especially as Bailey "shouted" the song. The final touch being little Iko taking the tissue paper torch and lighting the flame (aka the tissue paper flames suddenly appeared from the wooden bowl!

So be sure to make up a CD of national anthems and Chariots of Fire for your party, and light your own torch too.

GOOD TO KNOW - Olympic Fun Fact
The Olympic Flame is a symbol of the Olympic Games commemorating the theft of fire from the Greek god Zeus by Prometheus, its origins lie in ancient Greece, where a fire was kept burning throughout the celebration of the ancient Olympics. The fire was reintroduced at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, and it has been part of the modern Olympic Games ever since.
